Student Awards
ASME
Awarded Clarke Scholarship Award - In
January 2005, Penn State's American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME) Student Section applied for and was awarded
$6000 from the ASME Clarke Scholarship. This is the
third time that Penn State was selected for this award
since the award inception in 2001. ASME guidelines
indicate: "The scholarship recognizes ASME student sections
for the quality and variety of experiences and opportunities
they provide for their members, while rewarding departments
with the means to do more for their students. A condition
of the award is that the money be used for scholarships
for incoming freshmen who have an interest in mechanical
engineering." Three incoming Penn State freshmen
with preference for Mechanical Engineering were selected
to receive $2000 each. The three Clarke Scholarship
recipients are: Zachary Curran, Elizabeth Dahm, and Joshua
Orlowski. These students will receive their scholarship
checks at the first student chapter meeting of ASME in
September. (09/05)

Challenge
X team places 5th place overall in 2005 Challenge X: Crossover
to Sustainable Mobility Competition Series. The
Challenge X team, along with team advisor,
Daniel Haworth, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, competed
with 17 other universities across North America at GM University
in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Students used computer-based
mathematical modeling tools to objectively compare and
select advanced technologies they would use in the overall
design of their Challenge X vehicles. The teams also developed
and used rapid prototyping and hardware-in-the-loop tools
to validate their models and control systems. To read more
