Senior
mechanical, nuclear engineers honored

The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering
celebrated its senior class at its first Senior Recognition
Reception and Banquet Monday evening at The Penn State
Conference Center Hotel.
The event brought together more than 80 students in
the mechanical and nuclear engineering major, along
with industry sponsors, faculty and staff.
Individual awards were given to the outgoing seniors,
including the Dr. John P. Karidis Department Head's
Award, the Thomas Briggs Hunter Memorial Award for
Student Leadership and the Nuclear Chairman's Award.
Laura Slingerland was named the winner of the Karidis
Award. The award honors a mechanical engineering student
who has made an important contribution in advancing
the research in his or her selected areas of study.
Casey McHenry was named winner of the Hunter Award.
The award is named for Thomas Hunter, a mechanical
engineering graduate student at Penn State from 1988
to 1994 who was known as a leader in volunteering his
time. Hunter died in a 1997 rock climbing accident.
James Corson was named the winner of the Nuclear Chairman's
Award.
The event was sponsored by the Penn State Mechanical
Engineering Society and the Penn State Nuclear Engineering
Society, with support by Pratt & Whitney, Air Products
and Chemicals, Boeing, Cummins, Dominion, Exelon, Norfolk
Southern, U.S. Steel, Westinghouse Electric and the
Learning Factory.
