ITMNR-4

Fourth International Topical Meeting

On Neutron Radiography

Advances in Neutron Imaging for the 21st Century

June 3 - 6, 2001

State College, Pennsylvania USA

Introduction

The Fourth International Topical Meeting on Neutron Radiography (ITMNR-4) will be held June 3–6, 2001 in State College, Pennsylvania, USA.  This will be the fourth conference in the series.  The previous meetings were held in Pembroke (Canada), Rikkyo University (Japan), and Lucerne (Switzerland).  The meetings are an international gathering of many of the individuals most active in neutron imaging.

The first two meetings were focused on system design and characterization, and the third meeting dealt with new detectors, imaging techniques and applications.  While contributions on all new developments in neutron imaging are welcomed, the focus for this meeting will be an attempt to provide an assessment of where neutron imaging is going in the 21st century, with regard to applications, hardware and techniques.  We hope to address several questions: What is the future of neutron radiography and radioscopy?  Where can we expect the advances to come?  What is the future role of neutron imaging in nondestructive testing?

We hope that specialists from academia, government and industry will find the program informative and educational.  For those who are not currently active in neutron imaging, the presentations will provide an opportunity to hear about the state-of-the-art methods and to learn more about this powerful inspection technique.

We are currently in the process of arranging both technical and cultural tours that may be of interest to participants and accompanying persons.  The Penn State Neutron Radiography facility at the Radiation Science and Engineering Center will be visited as part of the meeting.  An extended post-meeting tour will be offered if there is sufficient interest.

Format

The format of the meeting will be serial oral and poster sessions (as opposed to parallel sessions), so participants will be able to attend each presentation.  In keeping with the original concept of encouraging interaction among attendees, liberal breaks and discussion periods will be scheduled.  The language of the conference will be English.  Papers will be published in the Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes.

An opening Plenary Lecture will be given by Mr. Harold Berger, who will review some of the history of neutron imaging and provide some comments on the future applications, methods and challenges in this Nondestructive Testing method.  Mr. Berger, President of Industrial Quality, Inc, is an applied physicist with more than 30 years experience in NDT and imaging systems. Mr. Berger's background includes developments with x-rays, gamma rays, neutrons, protons, eddy currents, infrared, holography and ultrasound.

Location

The meeting will be held in State College, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.  State College is located in the fertile Nittany Valley of central Pennsylvania.  The town grew around the Pennsylvania State College established in 1855, and was incorporated in 1896.  Adjacent to Penn State University, it is the quintessential college town with about 40,000 residents.  Nearby mountains, caves and streams provide many recreational activities.  The Penn State campus offers numerous interesting tours and museums. The University Park Airport has commercial flights from several international airports.  The weather conditions in early June are quite pleasant, with daytime temperature averaging about 72 °F (20 °C).

Additional information on State College and The Pennsylvania State University can be found on the web at www.visitpennstate.org and www.psu.edu.  The ITMNR-4 web site is www.me.psu.edu/itmnr-4/.

Conference Registration

Registration for the meeting should be completed by March 30, 2001 using the enclosed form.  Copies of the Conference Registration Form in RTF or in MSWORD format can be found on the ITMNR-4 web site.  Payment of the Conference Fee is due at the time of registration.  The registration fee of $310 U.S. (before March 30, 2001, after March 30, 2001 the fee is $385 U.S.) includes the receptions, the conference dinner, and one copy of the meeting’s proceedings.  Additional copies of the proceedings are available for an additional fee.  Be sure to register any accompanying persons and include any additional fees. Please make payment in U.S. dollars payable to PSU.  Reference ITMNR-4 in the memo area.  It is also possible to pay the fees via a bank-to-bank wire transfer using the details provided on the Registration Form.  It would be helpful if you would notify Ms. Wendy Donley by e-mail or FAX if you are sending your fees by wire transfer so we could notify you of any problems. wrdnuc@engr.psu.edu
