SAE Flow Restrictor

Figure 3: Flow restrictor test model

Use: This test prototype was used to study air flow through a restrictor. Formula SAE regulations require an 18 mm diameter flow restrictor between the throttle valve and the turbo, but they do not specify the geometry. Penn State SAE built four models with different configurations and tested them on a flow bench to see which provided the greatest flow. A CNC lathe was then used to produce an aluminum version of the best design.
