Project Summary:

Team Dynamic Movements was commissioned to build a mobility support device for a child who suffers from physical limitations. Our client, who will be referred to as "Baby K" for confidentiality reasons, has a 45º forward lean in addition to joints that are either underdeveloped or fused together. These limitations make walking without assistance impossible.

The previous mobility device for Baby K, Mobility Support Unit I (MSU I), was constructed last spring by a previous design team and is pictured below. This unit inhibited her independent walking ability. MSU I did not adequately meet Baby K's dimensional needs and it limited her maneuverability. Due to these problems, it was essential that Baby K receive a new device.

Baby K needed a device that would enable her to move independently at home, outside, and at school.

Some factors that were addressed in our design were:

  • a lightweight frame
  • maneuverability of the device
  • an adjustable seat
  • the ability for Baby K to work from a table while in the unit
Currently, Baby K has received a commercial device, however it is not designed for outdoor use. Our team goal was to design a mobility aid that allows Baby K to move freely and independently, both indoors and outdoors.
