![]() The armrest of the device functions both as a hand rest and a workspace. There is also adequate room in the front of the device for Baby K's icons, which she uses to communicate with those around her.
Since it was difficult to obtain accurate measurements of Baby K, and since she will continue to grow, the device needed to be adjustable. This adjustability was obtained by making the main support column adjustable from 16" to 22".
Team Dynamic Movements decided that the padded y-strap was the best seat design. This y-strap will give Baby K the support she needs to walk without interfering with her gait. The y-strap will also provide her with enough support to sit for a short period. The straps also come in various sizes and are very adjustable. This desing aided our team in customizing the seat to her exact dimensions.
Baby K's Physical Therapist recommended putting bumpers on the unit in order to aid in maneuverability. The Physical Therapist mentioned that the bumpers she had seen on other mobility devices worked quite well. Therefore, our team wanted to include them in our final design. Since the bumpers need to be non-marking and very easily rotated, we decided to use RollerBlade(TM) wheels on the corners of the device. These wheels help the unit roll out of tight spaces and corners, while preventing damage to the home's interior.
The spherical caster wheels were tested in the family's home. The spherical caster wheels had smooth direction changes, tight turn radii, and worked well on carpet and asphalt surfaces. These wheels were the best choice because they met our teams wheel criteria.
