News Printing Company Inc. (NPC) was first established in the offset printing and binding industry in 1954. The company purchased its first web press in 1960 to increase the efficiency of printing the local newspaper, The Blair Press. In addition to printing the local newspaper, News Printing Company also printed work for the Government Printing Office (GPO). NPC now averages more than $20 million annually from the GPO [NPC01]. NPC has grown in size tremendously, since its origination in 1954. In addition to offset printing, NPC has also expanded its business into the digital printing industry.

In addressing News Printing Company's (NPC) objective of reducing waste and labor costs, the Penn State student team focused on six specific areas: start up waste, run waste, plate change procedure, count control, and off-bearing labor.

By using techniques such as time studies, videotape analysis, conferring with experts, and inventory tracking, the team has concluded and recommended the best way to reduce waste and labor costs, specifically for book presses one and five. Some specific target areas are signature count control and waste management through monitoring. With the key goal of the team to save NPC money by reducing waste of book presses one and five by 30 percent, the calculated benefit was determined to be an annual savings of $103,500. With the savings from the off-bearing labor cost, the bottom line savings of this project is projected to be an annual saving of $124,800. Along with the cost savings, the team also prepared this final report, weekly project updates, a proposal, progress report, poster, web page summary, and an explanation to current employees of the objectives of the project.
