C/G Electrodes, a leading producer of graphite electrodes for the steel industry, has proposed that we design a new fume hood that would accommodate the two larger furnace sizes that they currently use. It is our goal to fulfill this task so that C/G Electrodes can continue to provide graphite electrodes to the steel industry, while remaining environmentally friendly.      The first step in this project is to visit the C/G Electrode facility, and obtain general information about the process, as well as layout plans for their furnaces and associate other equipment. From this point, we will begin to brainstorm for ideas, with some preliminary ideas including the use of extension legs on the fume hood, or hinged legs at the bottom of the fume hood such that it would accommodate all of the different furnace sizes, or at least the larger two furnaces that they have. Once we have developed some preliminary ideas, the ideas will be researched and scrutinized in order to determine the best solution to the problem. From here, design plans will be created, and a portion of the fume hood will be built to the specifications that have been agreed upon. Contact with the sponsor will be kept through weekly emails that will discuss our ideas, and obtain feedback about them. An additional on site visit may be required. The project will be kept under the $600 budget, with any other costs being deferred to C/G Electrodes.

1. Analyze the present design fume hood design along with the furnace structure.
2. Provide a new design that is non-conductive and could fold for storage, or modify the
current design to accommodate all of the furnaces.
3. If time permits, the design would be constructed on, or off site, and implemented into
normal operation at the plant. This will be an extended goal, beyond the initial goal of
    developing a proven design.
4. Once designed, and proven, C/G Electrodes would be responsible for all related
building costs, but team members would organize and coordinate the construction and
installation of the newly designed fume hood.
