Executive Summary

A Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) was constructed to compete in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) HPV single rider competition.  HPV Group B was responsible for the frame, suspension, body/aerodynamics, and seat/harness.  Group 2A and Group 2B built one vehicle together.  The vehicle was designed to meet ASME rules and regulations.  The project began by researching possible alternatives to the vehicle design.  After researching possible alternatives for the frame, suspension, shell, seat, and harness final designs have been completed.  We concluded that a suspension would not be used in this vehicle.  The seat and harness were bought already fabricated with a locking mechanism that eased installation.  The shell was custom made using Lucite.  Custom mounting brackets were made for each of the components using aluminum and steel.  Finally, a mechanically sound and safe vehicle was constructed.  It has been decided that we will not be attending the ASME sponsored HPV competition in May.  The bike will be handed down to next year’s HPV group for improvements and possible competition.

The HPV group would like to thank their faculty coach, Leland Engel, as well as the Penn State Mechanical Engineering department for making this project possible.
