Biomechanics and Bioengineering

We are improving drug delivery and healthcare.

Biomechanics and bioengineering, as related to mechanical engineering, involve the application of the principles, laws, and methods of mechanics to develop and improve medical diagnostics, biomedical devices, and biomechanical models. Our faculty and students apply mechanical principles to the design and improvement of laparoscopic surgical instruments and to the development of improved drug delivery systems. We develop mathematical models and computational tools of the human physiological and neurological systems to improve our understanding of organ function and dysfunction and to better diagnose disease. We explore mechanical designs that encompass precise testing and analyses to provide more accurate biopsies with less invasive surgical procedures and we develop new and better analysis methods for disease and for the design of pharmaceuticals.
